Is Days Gone Remastered Worth It in 2025?

Sony remastered Days Gone. I paid ten bucks. Do I regret it? No – but I probably should. Let’s talk about it.

Hear me out with this one – I loved the original. As in, it’s one of my favorite video games (let alone Sony exclusives) and has been ever since its release.

The visuals, the characters, the story – everything down to Deacon St. John muttering to himself about the rain and the Freakers – it all worked for me. So when Sony announced the remaster, I hit that pre-order button in a dissociated trance. The call of post-apocalyptic Bend, Oregon just took over.

Honestly? The remaster is great. But did we need it? Probably not.

What’s Actually New?

Luckily, they didn’t just paste a new texture over Deacon, Boozer, and the rest of Oregon – they actually added a few new elements:

Visual Enhancements
The remaster includes sharper textures, better lighting, deeper shadows, and an expanded draw distance. It’s still the same Days Gone, just moodier – and Deacon’s even prettier.

Push Square noted how the PS5 visuals actually amplify the horror.

DualSense Support
In typical Sony style, the remaster adds haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. It’s subtle – until you’re trying to throttle the bike and basically have to fight your controller. It’s cool, especially when tearing across Oregon’s rough terrain.

New Game Modes
Horde Assault: a terrifying Freaker rush.
Permadeath Mode: stressful but more rewarding.
Speedrun Mode: for those who don’t want to hoard every cloth scrap.
Enhanced Photo Mode: for perfect cinematic shots of Deek and Oregon.

TheGamer highlighted how these modes are a step toward a fuller apocalypse experience.

Accessibility Upgrades
Minor, but significant: a field-of-view slider, UI narration, and control remapping make this more playable for a wider range of people.

Price
Days Gone Remastered is priced at $49.99 standalone, or a $10 upgrade if you already own the PS4 version.
(Heads up: if you got it through PS Plus, it doesn’t count. Sorry.)

Did The Replay Disappoint?

Rough, sharp-tongued bikers with messy tattoos and tattered clothing are, unfortunately, my strongest bias. So yes, I found the replay worth it – even just to stare at Deacon during the cutscenes.

But revisiting this world hit me harder than I expected. The wilderness of Bend, Oregon looks stunning on a modern screen, and even the Freakers feel more intense. GameRant suggests the improved atmosphere gives the game its due.

Every time there’s a horde, I’m still getting the hell out of dodge.

The story hasn’t changed, but the visual polish gives it more emotional weight. For me, it was almost too easy to sink back into Deacon and Sarah’s world – though nostalgia’s probably doing half the work.

Hell, I even enjoyed listening to Radio Free Oregon again.

Is Days Gone Remastered Worth It?

If you didn’t like Days Gone back in 2018, this won’t change your mind. The core game is the same – story beats, characters, pacing – all intact.

But if you loved the original like I did? The $10 upgrade is basically a non-decision. You’re getting a better, more immersive version of a gorgeous game.

TechRadar argued the remaster isn’t as bad as it looks, and I agree.

And if you’ve never played Days Gone? Where have you been? This is hands-down the best way to experience it for the first time.

That said, the timing feels opportunistic. It’s not really intended as a preservation project like The Last of Us Part I remaster. Sony canceled Bend Studio’s unannounced live service project back in January 2025 – and now this.

Coincidence? Or market testing? GameRant thinks it might be the latter.

So, Sony – Where’s The Sequel?

This is the part that still stings – just like it did when Sony canceled any plans for Days Gone 2 a few years back. The original clearly set up a sequel, and fans (myself included) have been asking for it ever since.

But all hope’s not lost. This remaster is an easy, low-risk way for Sony to test the waters. If it sells well? Maybe the conversation changes. Or maybe they’re just milking it while they can. Either way, it’s odd timing.

If the remaster proves anything, it’s that Days Gone still has legs and players want more of Deacon St. John.

Final Thoughts

Maybe we didn’t need this remaster. We wouldn’t have missed it if it never dropped. But I’m glad it exists.

It reminded me why I fell in love with this game back in 2018. The scenery, the open roads, the intensity of the hordes – even Deacon’s muttering still feels like a soothing balm for my soul.

All of it still works – and now it just looks better (yes, delirious Booze-Man is still radioing in constantly).

While it might be a cash grab, it’s also a peace offering.
Maybe – just maybe – a sequel is still on the table.

What do you think – was this Days Gone Remastered worth it, or are we just enabling Sony’s remaster habit?

And more importantly: would you buy Days Gone 2 on release day?

I would. Sony – let the man ride again.
