the stillwave book review:
A Demon’s Guide to Wooing a Witch by Sarah Hawley was a light read – it was fun, easy, and low-stakes. That said, it didn’t hit the same mark as the first book in the Glimmer Falls series.
I appeciated the focus on Calladia as a strong, indepedent female character – we can always use more of those. The story highlighted the importance of not “dulling her edges” to fit into societal standards – a really important message.
Overall, I really enjoyed the messaging around accepting strong women as they are instead of trying to squash them down and force them into molds.
That said, some of the elements of the book felt a bit like déjà vu from the first – family issues, mom trauma, emotionally stunted magical beings. It did feel like sections were “copy and pasted” rather than this second book having it’s own unique elements. Instead of being a theme in the series, it felt more like unimaginitive repetition.
Astaroth had a lot of potential, but I feel like he was let down. The constant call-backs to his past sexual escapades felt like a running joke and got tired after a while. Instead of using this to add complexity to his character, it made him feel quite flat and shallow.
This could’ve passed for a story uploaded to Wattpad – take that as you will.
On the positive side, there were still many cute moments! Calladia and Astaroth’s banter is charming and the magic sparkles. This quick, easy read pulls you into its world for a cozy, short-lived escape.
If you’re craving something light-hearted, trope-filled, and don’t mind predictability, this one hits the spot.
